SURFACE PREPARATION
All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from oil, grease, petrol, waxes and loose adhered material
prior to the application of Perform.

Metals
Rust and paint should be removed to ensure proper adhesion between the primer and the surface.

Wood
Should be smooth, sound and dust free.

Concrete and Masonry
Must be sound and non-crumbling, and all the dust and grit removed. All concrete should be over 28 days old before attempting any application.

Priming
To achieve the strongest possible bond we recommend treating the surface first with DPI Thermo primer before applying the Preform Pavement Line Marking. After priming, a drying time of at least 10minutes subject to weather conditions should be allowed prior to laying the Preform.

Laying
Mark out the area and accurately position the Preform. Start heating at one end, tacking the edges before melting the whole item.

Application
Work consistently from one end to the other ensuring that the edges are melted down evenly. As the Preform reaches its molten state apply Thermo Beads (70/30 (preform/beads)) mixing evenly over the Flex-Therm.
Once the Preform has been bonded in to place, allow 5-10 minutes to cool and cure, depending
on the weather conditions.
Once the Preform is in place and allowed to cool it is immediately ready for use.

Applying Preform to difficult surfaces.
There are some surfaces to which it may be difficult to apply Preform or one may be unsure as to the compatibility. For example, Alkyd or epoxy resin may have “waxy” ingredients which resist adhesion bonding. Some concrete may contain accelerants or silicone ingredients which may repel adhesion.
As there are so many variables it is impossible to allow for every eventuality but as a rule, if you
are not sure, test it.

Test Patch
Routine would be to apply a piece of Preform to a clean, dry surface in a normal traffic area and leave for a minimum of 7 days. If after this it is still securely applied, then the surface is suitably compatible.

Effect of Water when applying Preform
The bond between the bituminous road material and Thermo plastic is caused by the fusion of
bitumen on the road surface and hot
Thermoplastic applied at 180-220°C. Hence any material on the road surface that prevents this
bond will cause failure in the lining.

One of the main causes of failure is the presence of moisture on the pavement and heavy mists, It is difficult to know how long after a downpour before preform thermoplastic can be applied. There are many factors that affect the drying period. Sometimes it can be a few hours if conditions are hot and dry or it can be up to 24hours if it is cold and damp or hot and humid.

Chisel Test
The chisel test is the final test to ascertain if the thermoplastic has bonded to the pavement material. Using a hammer and chisel remove a small corner to confirm adhesion has occurred by chiselling into the preform and substrate. The preform should still adhere to the substrate after the piece has been chiselled away.
